How it works

Pinealon is a three-residue peptide (Glu-Asp-Arg) from the Khavinson bioregulator series. The proposed mechanism is unusual for a peptide of this size: short peptides in this class are reported to enter the nucleus and interact directly with DNA, modulating transcription rather than acting through a surface receptor. Published work examines neuronal survival under oxidative and hypoxic stress in cortical culture. The mechanism remains less established than for receptor-mediated peptides, and the literature is concentrated in a narrower set of groups.
