Semax is a synthetic analog of the ACTH(4-10) fragment, extended at the C-terminus with a Pro-Gly-Pro motif that confers resistance to peptidase cleavage while removing the corticotropic activity of the parent hormone. In published research it is associated with increased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor TrkB, modulation of the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems, and neuroprotective effects in models of ischemic and cognitive stress.
