How it works.
Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic analog of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. Unlike the MC3R/MC4R-selective PT-141, it is a broad agonist across the melanocortin receptor family, including MC1R. MC1R engagement in melanocytes drives melanogenesis, the effect for which the compound is most characterized in research. Its cyclic, N-acetylated structure confers resistance to enzymatic degradation and a longer duration of action than native α-MSH.
